Day Two in Salt Lake City:))

 Convention 079

Here we are on day two of our trip to Salt Lake City, Utah for our Stampin' Up! Convention.  Today we got to check in and get our Convention bags (which are absolutely gorgeous done up in Baha Breeze, Kiwi Kiss and Chocolate Chip - I guess you can tell I would love those colors wouldn't you?).  We also got our demonstrator copy of our NEW Fall / Winter Idea Book and Catalog which is fabulous.  I was practically drooling when I was reading it.  We all received 3...yes 3 FREE stamp sets just for attending Convention for our Make & Take projects.  I also got another FREE stamp set for sales.  I got another awesome gift from my Service Account Manager (aka SAM) for earning the cruise.

After getting our bags and catalogs, Carol (on the left) and I went on a bus tour to our Riverton Facility.  This picture is taken by the waterfall inside the building, right in the break / lunch area where the SU employees enjoy.  The facility is just incredibly gorgeous.

Convention 056

This is a view outside of one of the windows in side the facility.  How gorgeous are the mountains in the background?  The last time I was here, we were here about a week earlier and their was SNOW on the tops of the mountains.  There was a little here and there, but not much.  The views are still incredible though.

When we got back from our tour, we got to shop in Momento Mall and get some fabulous Stampin' Up! logo items - clothing, pens, chapsticks, camera bags, craft bags, etc.  The line was all the way down the length of the Convention Center for about 9 hours today.  I didn't go to the mall until 6 pm (when there were no lines) because I had to go to my Make and Take Helper training session.  That's right, this year I am helping to teach the demos how to make the projects with their new stamp sets that they will be taking home.  My shift is Saturday morning and I am very excited.

After my training and making my projects, I met up with a group of demos for dinner at the Olive Garden.  We had such a blast.  We are now back in our room swapping cards and gifts and then reading the catalog and making our wish lists.  So much fun...don't you want to join us next year?~

Tomorrow is the actual first day of Convention when we start off with a General Session, get to see demonstrations using new products, etc.  We also have our Awards Night tomorrow night followed by an evening of fabulous entertainment.

I will be walking across stage this year three times - for earning the trip to Hawaii, for reaching my $100,000 in career sales and also for my personal sales this year.  I am very excited!

Well, I had better run.  It is getting late again tonight and I have to get my things ready for tomorrow.

Have a great night and I will have more from Convention this week.  Tomorrow is a busy day with a full day of Convention and then running to dinner and then getting to Awards and Entertainment night.  I most likely won't be able to post until Friday, but you never know~

Happy Tuesday from SALT LAKE CITY!

Hello from sunny Salt Lake City, Utah!  I wanted to share another of my swap cards for the Stampin' Up! Convention again today, but first I wanted to tell you a little bit about our journey here.

I arrived here today just before 12:30 pm Central Time (2:30 pm back hom in Vermont) with my downline Carol.  We had great experiences traveling today.  We flew Frontier Airlines which is one neither of us had flown before.  We were a little nervous, but it was one of the best airlines we have flown on in awhile.  The seats were very comfortable and roomy.  There was a mini TV in the seat in front of you so that anyone who wanted could watch their own channel or choose a movie.  Great idea when traveling with young children.  I did not watch anything, but I thought it was a cool concept.  The headrests were also neat.  The sides of them pushed up against your head giving your head support for when you dozed off.  It was really very nice.  The people were friendly, they offered a great lunch service that wasn't just that boxed up, prepackaged and processed garbage.  They actually had salads, 'good' sandwiches, fruit salad, etc.  We would definitely fly them again.  It also didn't hurt that they offered the best price around.  We purchased our tickets through Expedia as they had the best rates of anyone out there.

Anyway, on to my card...  This is one that I am doing for a large group swap that is taking place on Friday during our lunch hour.  There are nearly 80 of us swapping during that time...77 to be exact.

Wanna take a peak at what the components of 77 cards looks like?  Well, it would be something like this -

009

There are a lot of pieces to this swap card.  I have 12 punched items on the front of the card alone - that doesn't even include the other layers on the card.

So, I bet you want to see the whole card, don't you?  Well, here it is:

007

The supplies used on this card are as follows:

Stamp set:  Fabulous Flowers

Cardstock:  Chocolate Chip, Whisper White, Bashful Blue

Ink:  Bashful Blue, Chocolate Chip, Whisper White Craft

Accessories:  Blue Gingham Ribbon, Craft and Ribbon Scissors, White Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, Crystal Effects, Dazzling Diamonds Glitter and Dimensionals.

The flower looked a little plain so in the center, I added Crystal Effects and a touch of Dazzling Diamonds glitter to the center of them.  You can see the glitter a little bit better here:

008

Well, I am off to bed now.  It is almost 11:30 pm back home in Vermont and we have been up since 4:30 am.  Tomorrow is a busy day.  We get to check-in to Convention starting at 9 am.  Carol and I will be in line bright and early as we get our Convention bags, books, FREE stamp sets AND the NEW FALL/WINTER IDEA BOOK AND CATALOG.  We are just too excited to be getting our hands on that book tomorrow!

We are then off to a tour of our Riverton Facility where we see the home offices and the warehouse where the shipping takes place.  It will be Carol's first time visiting there and I cannot wait to see her face.  The building is just beautiful - there is even a waterfall inside the building right in the break/lunch area.  It is truly spectacular!

So, thanks for stopping by and good night.  Hopefully more tomorrow.

Preview - New Stampin' Up! Level 3 Hostess Set - Happiness Always

Do you want a sneak peak at a sample using the new Level 3 Hostess Set called "Happiness Always"?  If you said yes, that is the right answer:))

This is a card that I am doing for two swaps.  One swap is a 2008 Fall/Winter Idea Book & Catalog swap with a group of demonstrators here at home and another batch if for Stampin' Up!'s annual Convention next week in Salt Lake City, Utah.  I am so-o-o excited about Convention this year I can't even begin to tell you.  It is always SO MUCH fun seeing all of the demonstrators I have met all over the United States, Canada and Hawaii.  We actually have demonstrators from Australia attend Convention.  Since Stampin' Up! has expanded to many countries now, I think we will have a good variety attending Convention this year since it is Stampin' Up!'s 20th Anniversary!  I hope to meet a whole group of new demonstrators while I am there!

Oh, I should mention that the paper behind the card in the background is a piece from our new Bella Rose Designer Series paper.  It is just scrumptious!  I will show you more of that in future posts so stay tuned.

015

This card is actually a little bit of a modified version of my swap card.  The flowers and the words are both from the "Happiness Always" Level 3 Hostess Stamp Set.  The words actually match our Decor Elements collection.  I cannot wait to make a framed item using this set with words and also putting the "Happiness Always" from the Decor Elements collection up on my wall.

This card has some special elements on it.  The flowers are stamped in two new 2008-2009 In Colors - Pink Pirouette and Kiwi Kiss.  I also added a little bit of So Saffron to the center of the flowers.  So Saffron happens to be my favorite color yellow and I love it with this color combination.  I am just LOVING the new In Colors.  I thought I would miss the old ones terribly, but the minute my demonstrator pre-order arrived and I got to open them up and play with them...man, I am in love!

I accented the flowers with a little Creamy Caramel and the new Riding Hood Red - both brushed lightly on with an aqua painter under the flowers to add a little shadowing.  I also added some old olive marker in the piercing in the corners to create the faux stitching.  The ribbon is our 5/8" wide Old Olive Grosgrain.  Oh, did you notice the scalloped edges?  That is made from our NEW SCALLOP EDGE PUNCH!  Anyone who knows me, knows that I am punch happy.  Whenever there is a new catalog that comes out, I am all over the new punches and accessories.  I just love the punches and the versatility of them.

016

I also added a touch of Crystal Effects to the flowers and then added some Dazzling Diamonds glitter - my friend Tina in Brandon, Vermont will love this card with the glitter:))  (Hi, Tina!)

The card in this post is actually my daughter's 19th birthday card.  The swap cards are a little different, but I don't want to give away the surprise for the people getting the other swaps...

So, what do you think of my swap cards?  Would you like one of them if you were a demonstrator attending Convention?

Thanks for stopping by and happy stampin',

Lynn

Announcing the July Featured Artist...

I received a lot of submissions this month to be the featured artist on my blog for July.  This month's Featured Artist is a customer and new email buddy of mine...Susan Byington!  Susan submitted work to me right after she got home from vacation.  As you know, that is a crazy time when you get back - unpacking, doing laundry, etc.  Sue was dedicated to submitting photos of her projects for the contest and I won't tell you what time she sent a lot of her photos - let's just say we all are usually deep in sleep for a very l-o-n-g time at the hour she submitted some of her photos:))

When Susan was done submitting her photos, I had the tough job of trying to narrow down the selections and showcase a good selection of what she submitted here.  It certainly wasn't easy to chose because I really liked many of the samples.  I tried to choose a nice variety and also pick samples that might be a little different than what you had seen before.

Susan was so excited to find out that she was this month's featured artist!  I think it would be kind of neat to leave her comments on her projects and this article at the bottom of this post.

So, on to some photos!  This first photo is of Susan's 3-D submission.  It consists of a gift bag, bookmark and card.  The set is really adorable.  Sue used glitter to accentuate the balloons and put us in the "party spirit".

A-SB6

Susan also submitted a number of her card creations.  I have captured just a small showcasing of them.  The first card is one that Susan first saw on my blog when I posted a photo of a swap card that i received at a demonstrator event I attended.  Susan was determined to figure out how to make the card and came up with this version for her submission.  I love the addition of the flower in the center!

A-SB9

I really like this next sample because Susan created a peek-a-boo window using the scallop circle punch in the center of her card to show off her flower on the inside.

This is a photo showing the card opened up so that you can see the window a little better.  Making the front flap of the card a little smaller is a nice idea to make your card a little different and be even more unique!

Before I add any more photos, it would be nice for you to get to know a little bit more about Susan.  Check out what she has to say below:

Name:  Suan Byington from O'Fallon, MO.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your family:  I tend to burn the candle at both ends until it "breaks in the middle".  My full-time job is my family with my husband Jay and 3 kids - Sarah 20, Adam 17 and Zach 12.  I have two birds, three cats, one beautiful little Maltese dog and a tank full of fish.  I love animals.  My dad calls us the "Byington Zoo".  I am working on landscaping flower beds and have a thriving wildflower garden in the back!  I work out with a trainer three times a week and try really hard to eat healthy.  I have lost over 45 pounds since March 1, 2007 and plan to continue my efforts.  I am 45 years old and don't like the aches and pains of aging:))  I also work 3 days a week for a photographer taking care of customers and managing all the "little things".  In the fall, I will spend every weekend watching my boys play football and soccer.

How long have you been rubber stamping or scrapbooking?  I don't scrapbook.  In fact, I am terrible about organizing or even developing my pictures.  Yes, I still use real film in my camera!  My family thinks I need to step into the digital age, but my little camera takes great pictures!  I'm just bad about the follow-through and organizing.  I do love to make cards, though.  I started about 10 years ago.

What is your favorite technique or type of stamping?  Anything that looks cool and makes the card special!

What are some of your favorite things (stamping or non-stamping related)?  Musicals, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Old TV shows like I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched, Winnie-the-Pooh, camping (ooooh the campfire!) the beach & water, books and God's Amazing Creation.

What tip(s) would you like to give other stampers - something you learned the hard way and wish you knew about first and/or something you just learned and thought it was neat?  Don't throw away scraps.  It feels great to create a card out of leftover scraps (and sometimes challenging!).

How were you introduced to stamping?  My Aunt Phyllis really got me started about 10 years ago.  She would always send the most AMAZING CARDS and I just couldn't believe she actually MADE them.  She invited me to a Stampin' Up! workshop and I was very skeptical.  Anything that looked that cool couldn't be easy to do.  It was the first time I had taken this route to her house and got terribly lost.  By the time I got there the workshop was over, but the demonstrator took the time to sit down with me and show me the things they had done and actually taught me how to create something and I was sold!  My first order was a black ink pad, some markers, white cardstock and a couple of stamp sets.  I still use those stamp sets.  (I never get rid of any stamps.)  All my cards were very simple, but it was fun.  The last few years I have been attending stamp classes when I could and trying to learn how to copy well.  I am finally learning how to put different ideas and techniques from other people together to create my own images.  It has taken a long time and I never sent anything without a critique from my family first.  If I don't get an enthusiastic thumbs up from them, I play with the card some more until it is "mail worthy".

Something you would like people to know about you:  I used to train and show Maltese in the obedience ring.  Now I just train my children.

What you love most about stamping?   IT IS GREAT THERAPY FOR ME and (hopefully) makes others feel good when they receive the finished product.  I think there is therapy in making someone else feel good, as well as the craft itself.

Here are a few more of Susan's creations:

A-SB7

This card is a fun one and Susan tells me that this card has a 3-D effect to it as well.  This is how she describes it ~ and I quote:)) "To make that card, I actually used glossy white cardstock and stamped the image multiple times in the various colors.  Then cut out all the sections of the image and mounted them with dimensionals over the Always Artichoke.  Always Artichoke is actually the base color.  It had to be an exact fit!  The effect was cool! "  If you look carefully at the card, you can actually see a little of that  3-D effect that she is talking about.

A-SB4

I think that this card is just adorable.  Sue created her own background on the cardstock by stamping flowers randomly all around.  The little 'friends' are stamped and then colored in.  I loved this stamp set when it was out.  It is now retired, but these little girls are so stinkin' cute:))

I hope you enjoyed this month's Featured Artist showcase.  Don't forget to leave Susan a comment under the post to let her know what you think of this article!

I will also post the remainder of the retiring accessory list on Monday, July 21st.  The next list that comes out will not be at a discount, only the items on this flyer will be discounted.  Again, if there is something on your list that you would like to purchase that will be retiring you should email your order to me right away as the quantities are depleted very quickly on these items and I cannot guarantee how long they will be available.

If you have not purchased your In Color ink pads, reinkers, cardstock or ribbon, you should also consider doing that now.  I would definitely order a set of reinkers for your ink pads before they are gone!  Stampin' Up! has already sold out of the Purely Pomegranate and Blue Bayou double stitched ribbons.  If you hurry, you should be able to get the Soft Sky, Groovy Guava, River Rock and Wild Wasabi ribbons while there are still some left.

To place an order with me, just email me your order that includes your name, shipping address, email address and phone number (in case I need to contact you) and I will get back to you with a total.  I accept PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and Discover for payments and we can take care of that by an emailed invoice or over the phone.  If you live locally, I can also accept a check or cash prior to my placing your order.  Don't forget that all orders over $150 qualify for hostess benefits of at least a Level One stamp set and an additional $15 in FREE product.  This offer is limited to shipping addresses in the United States only (per Stampin' Up!'s rules).  So check over the discounted retiring accessory list, the retiring stamp set list and your wish list from the current catalog.  Once you have your order together, email me as soon as possible to be sure to get the items you want before they are gone!

3D Wow - Virtual Swap Submission - Basket with Strawberries

Lynn - Basket (top view)

Check out this cute little basket made out of strips of paper!  I have been holding off showing this on my blog because I was saving it for a Virtual Swap that I was having with the girls in my downline that are part of my Stampin' Up! group.  Everyone made 3D projects and emailed the photos to me along with any special instructions or templates for the project.  I posted a photo album on my demonstrator only group blog and added a Template library where I put all the patterns for the projects so they could download them and make the projects on their own.

Lynn - Basket

The little strawberries in the basket also have their own pattern.  They are pretty easy to make and hold a little Hershey Kiss.  I made them out of Ginger Blossom paper.  I loved the pattern with the little dots that look like strawberries.

Lynn - Strawberries

My mother-in-law just came up and saw them and thought they were adorable!  She really went nuts over them so I hope the girls in my group like my virtual swap projects as well.  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

Thanks for stopping by ~

Technique - Watercolor Wash

009

I really liked this card layout that my friend Jen did.  I changed it up a little bit for my technique class last week.

The supplies used for this project are:

Stamp Set:  Infinite Goodness (Hostess Set - soon to be leaving us when the new catalog arrives)

Cardstock:  Confetti Cream, Not Quite Navy and More Mustard

Ink:  Jet Black StazOn and Not Quite Navy

Accessories:  Aqua Painter paint brush, Watercolor Wonder Crayons, Vanilla 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon, Dimensionals and a Mini Glue Dot.

I started off stamping the pear with Jet Black StazOn onto the Confetti Cream cardstock.  Using my More Mustard, Not Quite Navy and Close to Cocoa Watercolor Wonder Crayons, it was time to watercolor my pear and the background.  I used a really wet Aqua Painter brush to paint on some More Mustard Watercolor Crayon onto the bottom of the cardstock below the pear.  It almost looks as if the pear is sitting on a table instead of floating in the air.  I added a little Close to Cocoa crayon just underneath the pear to give a slight shadow and to definte the top of the imaginary table.

Then using the Not Quite Navy Crayon, I added color above the table and around the pear.  Be careful when using a dark color and doing a watercolor wash to use a lot of water and very little color from the crayon.  You can always add more color to make what you are watercoloring darker if needed, but it is sometimes hard to take color away if it is too dark.  I added more color around the pear to give the image a shadow and some depth as well.

The next step was to color in the pear.  I used the More Mustard Crayon directly onto the outline of the pear and anywhere else the black in was used to give the pear dimension.  Then I used a slightly less wet Aqua Painter to pull the color from my drawn outline to the center of the pear to spread the color.  Doing your watercoloring like this keeps the concentration of color on the outline of your image while coloring in a lighter tone of the image with the crayon you pull away from the outline.

I then stamped the words from Infinite Goodness onto the card using Not Quite Navy ink, added the Vanilla Grosgrain across the card and then tying my single knot in a separate piece of ribbon and attaching it with a glue dot to finish that part off.

The pear image is layered onto the Not Quite Navy layer of cardstock and then attached to the card using Dimensionals to give it a little more depth and interest.  A pretty simple card that looks pretty classy when it is done.  The great thing about this card is that it can be used for men as well as women.  It is a nice, generic card to have on hand for the quick man's birthday card, anniversary card, etc.

I hope you enjoyed this technique and this sample!  Thanks so much for stopping by...
